How to Safely Update WordPress & WordPress Plugins

WordPress 4.0 is here! And it’s niiiice.

I like all the improvements they’ve made – like the ability to embed videos and PayPal buttons directly in to your text editor, a more user-friendly plugins browser,  fixed scrolling when you’re writing a blog post or working on a page…and, ooooh, such a beautiful new structure for your media library!

Why Updating WordPress is so important

One word: Security. Along with all the nice visual and functional changes, keeping up with the newest versions of WordPress and Plugins protects you more from cyber attacks. There is countless malware out there that can infect your website’s health, or steal your password, so WordPress comes out with these big (and smaller) updates to put up a thicker wall between your site and computer viruses. I’ve had people come to me in a panic because their website was showing questionable text that they definitely did not put there. Not a pretty site, and it feels violating. So, please, for your own peace of mind…always keep WordPress and all Plugins up-to-date.

You also want to keep up with the latest updates so that your website continues to work properly. Sometimes a theme update won’t work well with an older version of WordPress, and vice versa. So it’s important to note that you should keep your website’s theme up-to-date, as well…but we’ll focus on that another time.

WordPress Stress!!

I know… I used to cringe every time a WordPress update was available, too. What if I do it all wrong?! What if I lose my website or it stops working?! Even plugin updates used to intimidate me, sometimes making the text editor un-usable or even completely wiping my website off the screen (horrifying, yes, but not the end of the world!)

Whether you’re a web designer who has been doing this a long long time, like me, or a DIYer… as with all technology WordPress glitches like this may happen sometimes. That’s why it’s very important to have a system in place for safeguarding your website’s content.

I’m going to show you my method.

First, Backup your Website and Update WordPress:

Now, no more excuses! You can DO this! 🙂
